Judging Panel Announced for 2012 Awards Final

Judging Panel Announced for 2012 Awards Final

31st August 2012

We have a shiny, ‘nearly new’, set of judges confirmed for this year’s final of the Funny Women Awards on Monday 24th September.  We’ve got some familiar faces and some new blood to ensure that we pick the best of the newest crop of female talent after our four month search.  As ever we’ve invited some of the biggest names from management, broadcasting, media and the arts to help us find a winner.

We’re delighted to welcome Caroline Raphael back onto the panel after a two year break.  Caroline is a much respected industry figure as the commissioning editor comedy & fiction for BBC Radio 4 and she also looks after the ed…

Acting up for the over 40s

Acting up for the over 40s

29th August 2012

Have you always secretly yearned to perform on stage but didn’t know how or where to begin?

From 12th September 2012 a Surrey based group will start a new course of performing arts workshops aimed at the over 40s to help you bring out your ‘inner artiste.’

PlayAct is the brainchild of four women who have previously attended adult performing arts classes.  Their workshops are aimed at anybody over the age of 40 who wants to join an amateur dramatics club, choir or dance class but without the pressure of competing with younger and more ambitious participants.

Founder Christine Humphries explains, “The idea is not to work towards perfo…

Day 25 at the Fringe

Day 25 at the Fringe

26th August 2012

Our final day at the Fringe has arrived; much to our surprise as we have often felt like this day would never make an appearance. A rollercoaster of emotions, we have experienced so many great things in Edinburgh this month and have had the time of our lives. A tough Fringe for everyone involved, the Funny Women team have faced challenges but have always come together at the end to get things done and to make sure that everyone is having fun!

As someone who had never been to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe before, I think it is fair to say that my initial experience was a mix of overwhelming emotions and anticipation. However, the city during festival time feels so welc…

Day 24 at the Fringe

Day 24 at the Fringe

25th August 2012

Officially into the last weekend of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the Funny Women team are starting to expel sighs of relief that we have all managed to survive the month! Over the past few weeks Edinburgh has really become our home and going back will probably take some acclimatisation.

For every Friday we have been in Edinburgh, Funny Women has hosted Comedy Cocktail Hour at Harvey Nichols, Edinburgh. Bringing a different line up of fantastic female comedy every week, the cocktail hour took over the extremely chic ‘Forth Floor,’ i.e. the one with the amazing view! Brilliant acts such as Ria Lina and Katherine Ryan performed to audiences to a superb response a…

Review - Discover Ben Target

Review - Discover Ben Target

25th August 2012

We know that Ben is a man, but a few of the Funny Women Team saw his show and, even before it got nominated for a Fosters Best Newcomer Comedy Award, we were all singing his praises.  We like a man who is in touch with his feminine side and any man who is brave enough to wear pink frilly knickers and tights, get sprayed in pink paint and take to the streets of Edinburgh with his entire audience in tow, deserves five lips! - Ed.

This is a show that cannot be categorized. It's not stand up. It's not theatre. It's not performance art. And yet it's all of these things.

Having been greeted by a handshake and given a boiled sweet from a man in a white boi…
