The Speech I Didn't Make

The Speech I Didn't Make

30th September 2011

There are so any people that I didn’t get a chance to thank for their help with this year’s Funny Women Awards on Monday night.  Some of them were in the programme but there’s nothing like saying it out loud.  This is the next best thing.

A talented line up of acts, a well-attended and bustling VIP reception at the Groucho Club and then a full house at the Leicester Square Theatre.  To top it all, we have a brilliant new set of clever and appreciative Awards winners who are ready to take on the comedy world.

The first lot of silent 'thank yous' go to my industry panel of promoters, producers, agents and broadcasters who gave of t…

Runner up Katherine Bennett on fulfilling dreams

Runner up Katherine Bennett on fulfilling dreams

29th September 2011

Katherine Bennett was a close runner up to the overall Funny Women Award.  Here she recounts her experience of being in this year's final.

"My experience of being part of the Funny Women Awards is an entirely positive one.  I have wanted to be a comic for as long as I can remember but having left university with a degree in Theology my wise (now dead; and not so wise) mum recommended that I train to be a teacher 'just in case'.  Just in case became a career, and dreams of being a comic were shelved, then transferred to the loft when I had my children.  If it wasn’t for Funny Women, with whom I did my first gig in 2008, I suspect th…

Variety is winning formula as Ladies Live Longer

Variety is winning formula as Ladies Live Longer

29th September 2011

Ladies Live Longer is a collaboration between Victoria Temple-Morris and Louise Fitzgerald. Together they've won our Variety Award in partnership with the Leicester Square Theatre.  Here's their story.

"In May of this year we ladies sat in Victoria’s kitchen, glass of red wine in each hand (always four on the go!) and thought that we had jolly well better start writing something we could actually show to other people other than just to the reflection of ourselves in the window! 13 months prior to this moment we got together on the premise of writing a screen play. We wrote it all and laughed out loud at our hysterically funny script. When we read it …

Who said business wasn't funny?

Who said business wasn't funny?

28th September 2011

Have you ever just wanted to break free from your daily business life and embrace your alter ego? Each of us have many interests that connect with our everyday working  lives and businesswoman-cum-comic Julia Streets brings her double life to the stage laughing about how she manages to combine running her own company with performing comedy part time.

It’s unusual to find the business and stand up colliding and Julia will be performing her show  'Streets in the City' in London showing us how she does it!  More than that, she’s doing it to raise money for the charity, ‘Children in Crisis’.

Julia was first…

Christine Robertson is top of the pile for Sky 1 Writing Award

Christine Robertson is top of the pile for Sky 1 Writing Award

28th September 2011

Winner of the first ever Comedy Writing Award organised by Funny Women in partnership with Sky 1, Christine Robertson, reflects on her night of glory.

"After a cheeky white wine (large) and a short walk in the pissing rain (glamour), I rocked up to London's Leicester Square Theatre on Monday night having calmed myself into a 'Que Sera Sera' state of mind.

"The next three hours were filled with a surreal mix of a) belly laughs at the stand-up finalists, b) nervous chatter with the other two, very lovely, shortlisted writers, Elise Bramich and Lucy Trodd, and c) emergency bladder control when remembering why I was there.

"To avoid ha…Read more
